Prague is an incredible city with a mix of history, architecture, and vibrant culture. It’s is one of my favourite capital cities of Europe. To date I’ve personally visited Prague on no less than 5 separate occasions. Here I’m going to tell you about some essential places to visit during your stay.
Explore Prague Castle
The largest ancient castle complex in the world, Prague Castle is a must-visit. Within the complex, don’t miss:
- St. Vitus Cathedral (stunning Gothic architecture)
- Golden Lane (tiny colorful houses, once home to castle guards and even Franz Kafka)
- Old Royal Palace (historical seat of Czech rulers)
Charles Bridge
This iconic bridge, lined with baroque statues, connects Old Town and Lesser Town. Go early in the morning or at sunset for the best views without the
crowds.
Old Town Square
One of the most picturesque places in the city, Old Town Square is home to:
- Astronomical Clock (every hour, watch the figures move in a medieval show)
- Church of Our Lady before Týn (impressive Gothic church with twin spires)
- Jan Hus Memorial
The Jewish Quarter (Josefov)
Prague’s Jewish Quarter has a rich history, with landmarks like:
- Old Jewish Cemetery (one of the oldest in Europe)
- Spanish Synagogue (beautiful Moorish-style architecture)
- Jewish Museum (insightful exhibits about Jewish history in Prague)
Petrin Hill & Tower
For great views, climb (or take the funicular) up Petrin Hill to the Petrin Lookout Tower, often called Prague’s “mini Eiffel Tower.” The gardens and
Mirror Maze are also fun to explore.
The Lesser Town (Malá Strana)
This charming area surrounding Prague Castle is home to:
- Wallenstein Garden (beautiful baroque gardens with peacocks)
- John Lennon Wall (colorful street art & graffiti dedicated to peace)
- Kampa Island (great for a peaceful riverside stroll)
Take a cruise on the Vltava River
See Prague from a different perspective with a river cruise, especially at night when the city lights reflect off the water.
Try Czech Food & Beer
Czech cuisine is hearty and delicious. Try some of the following to experience the city as the locals do:
- Goulash (meat stew with dumplings)
- Svíčková (beef sirloin in creamy sauce)
- Trdelník (sweet pastry, though more of a tourist treat than a traditional dish)
- Pilsner beer (Czechs consume the most beer per capita in the world!)
Vyšehrad
A bit off the beaten path, Vyšehrad offers:
- A historic fortress with panoramic city views
- Vyšehrad Cemetery, the resting place of famous Czech figures
- Basilica of St. Peter and Paul
Experience Prague’s Nightlife
The city has amazing bars, beer gardens, and music spots:
- Cross Club (industrial, steampunk-style club with electronic music)
- U Fleku (historic beer hall serving their own brew)
- Letná Beer Garden (a great place to drink beer with a view)
